Bridge Report 4/18/25

The DOT is still targeting mid to late June for opening.  The plan is to hold the bridge in the raised position when navigation season on the canal begins (May 16).  All equipment is to be in position inside the pits so work in the pits can continue even when the bridge is raised.

This week they will continue with machinery alignment and initial bridge balancing (involves the counterweights).  The public will see work on the stairways and platforms, the stair railings, replacement of concrete sections of sidewalk, pouring the pedestal for the traffic light signal at the north end of the bridge, and hopefully some overall housekeeping in the general bridge area.

The DOT engineers have been made aware that the TAP grant to make the Smith Street bridge cyclist and pedestrian friendly and safe is slated to begin July 4 and be completed by September 2.  They understand that this means the Main Street bridge MUST be completed and open to traffic before the beginning of July.
